First Scottish Public Hearing on the right to health.
Organised by the People’s Health Movement of Scotland, the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE), NHS Health Scotland, The University of Strathclyde Centre for Health Policy and other leading third sector organisations in Scotland.
A panel comprising representatives from Scotland’s public sector and academia will hear evidence on progress and barriers in addressing social determinants of mental health rights, with powerful testimonies presented using a range of visual, oral and interactive media. The event will be chaired by Judith Robertson, Chair of the Scottish Human Rights Commission.
The hearing will approach this right with a focus on mental health inequalities and the social determinants of poor mental health in Food, Employment and Housing. The Scottish Government Mental Health Strategy 2017-2027 acknowledges the importance that human rights must play: “Our efforts must deliver on a human rights-based approach, so that people in the most marginalised of situations are prioritised in achieving health”
The overall purpose of the public hearing is to investigate the status of health rights; enhance intersectional understanding and awareness of the barriers to achieving positive mental well-being and solutions to help overcome them; and seek commitment on a joint plan for monitoring and acting on this right.
